KOHIMA: The State Vector Borne Disease Control Programme organises World Malaria Day at the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare in Kohima on Tuesday. This year’s theme for the event was Time to Deliver Zero Malaria: Invest, Innovate, Implement.

Speaking on the occasion, the principal director of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Vibeituouno M. Sachu mentioned that the state is progressing steadily towards making Nagaland a completely malaria-free state. She also mentioned that there have been no malaria-related deaths in the state since 2017. The three districts, Mokokchung, Longleng, and Zunheboto have been successful in preventing malaria with zero cases reported from these locations.

Commissioner of Health Y. Kikheto Sema mentioned that the state is one of the success stories when it comes to malaria elimination in the country. The state has been able to bring down the malaria cases from 8489 cases in 2009 to only 5 in 2022. Also, the number of malaria deaths in 2006 was 75, while the same has been completely eliminated in 2022. He also mentioned the need to create continuous awareness about the devastating effect on health as well as the social and economic consequences of malaria. He called on for support from political organisations, all departments and institutions, NGOs, religious groups as well as the general public in the efforts to eliminate malaria.

Several other events were organised district-wise across the state. The best-performing Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) from across the were also felicitated on the occasion. Their names were revealed as Chichanbeni, Temsujungla, and Keneiphrenuo under the Kohima district, Latika, Katoli, and Kughali Achumi from Dimapur, Chubatola (Chakba), Sunepmongla (Longmisa), and Toshinaro (Lakhuni) from Mokokchang, Martha, Nrano and Zuchobeni Ovung from Wokha, P. Amenla Phom, Phanyu Phom and Ounching Phom from Longleng and Grace, Zhenaho and Inali Zhimo from Zunheboto districts.
